What inspires this week’s post was an email I received from my first graphic designer who I worked with some 30 years ago. We always liked each other. It was a nice change of pace to hear from her–and it put her top of mind for me for future design needs. Here are examples of what you might include in a similar message to your old clients.
Sift through your entire contacts list for clients you had many, many years ago and send them a “Wondering How Your’re Doing” email. Assuming you had a pleasant and successful working relationship with them, they are likely to open it. At best, it may lead to more
business. At a minimum, it gives you a pleasant break in the day to connect again with someone you enjoyed working with.
Keep it Short & Light
1.Start with the impetus for the email:
- I saw your newsletter and wanted to say hello.
- I read your LinkedIn entry on… and wanted to say hello.
- I found an old letter from you and wanted..
2.Share one or two things about yourself:
- These are crazy times, but we are managing to hold our own. Since we worked together, we have expanded to … and (no surprise) are now working virtually much more than before.
- Since we were in touch last, much has happened. I changed jobs, now work as… at… We had a baby and now live in… Fortunately, Covid has not affected our business too badly, since people still need…
- During these times, it is hard to keep moving forward, but luckily we actually just added two new clients.
3.Conclude:
- Hope you are doing well.
- Looking forward to the end of this pandemic! Stay well.
- Until this pandemic ends, stay safe and be well.
Unexpected, But Welcome
People are quick to trash unwanted emails, but an email from someone associated with a pleasant working relationship will always get opened.
Who can you connect with from your past?
