When you were a child, you likely enjoyed saying, (or trying to say) “Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers,” or “She sells seashells by the seashore.” There is something that engages the ear and hooks into our memory about a sequence of words or phrases that begin with the same sound. For business people, what was a game in youth can be a gain in business for you today.
Wired for Patterns
The human brain loves and responds instantly to patterns, both visual and aural. Visual patterns help us survive daily life: red lights/green lights; the faces of people we know; the streets where we live. If we had to stop and figure out the meaning behind red vs. green every time we came to a traffic light, we would likely get nowhere fast and also have more accidents.
This or That?
Which appeals to you more? Which is easier to remember and repeat?
- We offer you responsible leadership, proven experience, and efficiency, OR
- We offer you responsiveness, reputation, and reliability.
Most likely, you chose (2).
Aural alliteration creates equally satisfying and appealing patterns for the brain. Think “calm, cool, and collected;” “big, bold and beautiful.” When offered in a group of three, you get the added benefit of rhythm, which our brains also embrace. When offered in opposition, alliterative words can add impact to a choice: “Flip or flop?” “Minimize risk or maximize gain?” “Leverage X now or lose Y later?”
In a world of information overload, blurring of products and services, and short attention spans, alliteration helps you make an impact and be easily remembered. Use alliteration to
- Describe value at a high level
- Grab attention in an email
- Establish options
- Set up categories
- Title a proposal, post, or article
How can you incorporate alliteration into your communications to build business?
