The Toastmasters World Championship of Public Speaking took place this past weekend. After an elimination process over time that involves six rounds of talks, it all comes down to a final test of a 5-7 minute speech in front of 2000 Toastmasters. Daunting, to say the least. The 2014 winner’s speech is not yet on line, but it is interesting to compare the winner’s talk from 2013 to the talk of a recent TED presenter, who, because she stutters, would likely not have gotten close to the Toastmaster finals, but who is nevertheless equally affecting. What similarities do you see in both talks? What can you learn from both?

What Works
Though very different in personality, style. and message, at the heart of both presentations are authenticity, simplicity, and a story well told. As I continually stress in my coaching and workshops, success in presenting isn’t about tricks or technology. On stage, across a desk, or doing a demo presentation, a large part of your success is about being true to yourself and your commitment to sharing something of value to your audience.

“Thanks to you, our presentation went very well…I am in awe at how you are able to analyze a situation and help me focus in on the key points that need to be clarified and emphasized. You make it look easy, but I know it is not! Lynn Hutzel-Visel, VP, Comerica Bank
