What extensive knowledge do you have that you probably take for granted? For example, do you know a lot about fishing, cooking, selling, being a single parent, using social media, fixing cars, running volunteer organizations, removing stains, managing a team, raising bees, etc.? Now, what if you could turn that knowledge into hundreds or thousands of dollars’ worth of revenue? Sounds good, right? And Paulette Ensign, who has forty+ years’ experience turning information into money-makers, helps her clients do just that. She explains how it’s done using a very simple analogy.
It’s All About …
Paulette tells clients, “The key to converting information into money-making ventures is either selling your content in customized bulk tangible formats or licensing the content or digital formats that reflects your expertise. That could be in the form of tips, audio, books, a course, or other formats.”
While many people grasp that concept right away, some do not.
When clients still don’t understand what licensing is and how it works, Paulette uses an analogy to clear up their confusion. “Think of licensing this way: Let’s say you own an apartment building. When you own an apartment building, the whole building is yours. You let people use each apartment by giving them a written legal document that says how they can and cannot use the apartment, and for what certain period of time, in exchange for paying you a certain amount at a particular time. You and they agree to those terms and both sign the agreement.
That’s the same that happens when you “rent out” your intellectual property, your knowledge (converted into online or offline products or courses) to organizations, companies, and other interested groups You provide a written document defining their usage and they pay you for the use. You always continue to own your property unless you sell the ownership to someone else.
As a result, you get an additional revenue stream by having someone else use and distribute your property, with your permission, and you reach more people than you can reach on your own.
Once they understand what licensing is and its potential for earning extra significant income,” Paulette says, “It is easy to move on to explore with them the possibilities of their own situation.
From Confusion to Clarity to Results
It is human nature that when people are confused, they don’t act; they don’t buy, they don’t change, and they don’t commit. When they can see clearly what you are talking about, everything becomes possible. Metaphors (and analogies) are the most powerful clarifying tools you can use to get the results you want.
Where in your world would a metaphor or analogy clear up the confusion that is the obstacle to achieving the results you seek from your listeners?
