Two unrelated events come together this week for this blog. One is happening as I write this. President George H.W. Bush is being eulogized in Washington by his biographer Jon Meacham. The other event is being asked by Top Sales World to be one of the judges voting for the best sales book of 2018. What is the connection?
Universal Advice
Nearly all the sales books emphasize the need in these extremely competitive business times to be unique, to focus on the customer, to add value to the business relationship, to go the extra mile, to exceed customer expectations, to stand out, etc. You get the idea. Then, each author has a unique system for doing that.
One Simple Way to Stand Out
The late President had his own way of standing out. In the many stories being repeated this week about President Bush, one was his habit of writing personal notes to people. Not texts. Not emails. Nor boiler plate notes with just a signature to seemingly personalize it, but hand-written, personal notes.
What a concept.
Surprise Your Clients
Thank them with an actual hand-written letter. Let it reflect that you gave real thought to it. Reference something specific to your work with them.
- Something about their team?
- A reference to their culture?
- A mention of a personal exchange?
- Other?
There are many ways to stand out, but sometimes, the simplest actions are the most impactful.
