What is more fun than watching the Presidential or Vice Presidential debates? Watching the lines move in real time on a Frank Luntz focus group dial session review graph during those debates. For those who may not know, Frank Luntz is a political pollster and commentator. He has combined technology with polling so that audiences can see instantly the impact of what someone else is saying. How would you do in your client presentations in a Luntz focus group?
As Luntz says on his site, “It’s not what you say. It’s what they hear….We pinpoint language that garners support and inspires action.” (I applaud his emphasis on the content and would add that the congruency between what they hear and what they see also contributes to how people will react.)
So, in a Luntz focus group consisting of your clients,
- Would your opening lines start strong and indicate that you have your listener’s attention from the get go?
- Would they dip on a weak message?
- Would they soar again with your concrete stories and examples?
- Would they dive as you got lost in the weeds?
- Would they flatten out as you lost your storyline?
- Would they plummet as you dropped into a monotone?
- Would they rise again with a strong summary?
