Let
the Election Metaphors Fly!
Arguably, the biggest sales challenge of the century is done in a Presidential
election. Now that Mitt Romney has announced Paul Ryan as his Vice President
running mate, watch both the media�s description of events and the use of
metaphors ramp up against each other by the two parties in their efforts to win
over our hearts and minds in November.
The Christian Science Monitor described the current situation
best: "Republicans, Democrats scramble to frame Paul Ryan's political
persona�Bold move or potential disaster for Americans? Republicans and Democrats
try to shape Ryan's image to their own advantage�
Senior Obama adviser David Axelrod says Ryan is a "right wing ideologue" who
wants to convert Medicare into a voucher plan, putting the program for the
elderly in "a death spiral."
[Strategy: Scare us to death with the negative associations to ideologues and
death spirals.]
Axelrod again in The New York Post
A top Obama political adviser, David Axelrod, said Monday that Romney's
selection of Ryan is reminiscent of John McCain's choice of Sarah Palin four
years ago. He told "CBS This Morning" he remembers the initial excitement
surrounding Palin's selection, but says he doesn't believe the choice of Ryan
"is going to be a plus for Mr. Romney." Axelrod called Ryan "a genial fellow"
who advocates harsh policy positions, particularly on Medicare.
[Strategy: Nice guy (good), but remember Sarah Palin (bad)!]

In the meantime, the Republicans seem to be pushing Ryan's pluses: he is young,
appealing, a good family man, smart, articulate, committed to their small
government philosophy and well respected in Washington. I suspect the framing of
the candidates and their issues will intensify in the next ten weeks leading up
to the election.
From a metaphorical point of view it is fascinating to watch this contest
unfold. Stay tuned to see what both parties do next.
